JBU Upset in Men’s Soccer
Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 20, 2003) — Friends University of Wichita, Kansas scored an upset victory over John Brown University on Saturday 2-1 in the final game of the two-day 21st Annual JBU Men’s Soccer Classic. Friends had been defeated on Friday by Oklahoma City University and the Golden Eagles were victorious the first day over Bethel College of Indiana.
JBU scored first on an assist by Shawn Wierick and goal by Federico Suarez. with 38:06 left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead before Friends came back with 12:00 minutes left in the half to knot the score. It was just over mid-way through the second half before Friends scored their second goal to take the lead at 2-1 that would be the final score.
Junior Honorable Mention All-American Pablo Fernandez collected 13 saves from his goalkeeper position. JBU’s offense had 18 shots on goal but just was unable to connect for more than the one goal early in the game.
“This was a disappointing defeat after the good win yesterday,” commented Coach Bob Gustavson following the loss. “We played so well against Bethel, but did not have that intensity today. We must learn to play with concentration on consecutive days since the post season demands such.”
JBU will travel to Tahlequah on Wednesday, September 24, for an afternoon game with Northeastern State University at 4:00 pm. The next home game is on Saturday, September 27, when Belhaven College of Mississippi comes to town for a 3:00 pm contest.
In the opening game of the second day, Oklahoma City University and Bethel College fought to a 2-2 tie during regulation and neither team was able to score in two 10 minute overtime periods. Since this was non-conference action, the score ended in the 2-2 tie.
