JBU Volleyball Edges By Southwest Baptist University

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 24, 2003) — The Golden Eagle volleyball team rose to the occasion on Tuesday evening to defeat Southwest Baptist University 3-1. Scores of 31-29, 30-28, 28-30 and 30-27 decided the close fought match. JBU was playing without leading hitter, junior Meghann Wharton who had been injured in the Wayland Baptist match on Saturday.

Statistically speaking, the Golden Eagles were led by seniors Christine Matchell and Kemi Rogers and sophomore Elisa Evans with 14, 13, and 15 kills respectively. Freshmen Rachel Melby and Emily Yates were at the tops of the assist category with 24 and 26. Rounding out the evening performance for JBU statistically were sophomore Christine Wells with 21 digs and senior Jairin Schrader with 23 digs.

Commenting on the play of her team, Coach Robyn Gordon said, “We played well as a team, recording 91 digs and 58 kills. We covered the court well and were able to put the ball away consistently. Three hitters in double digits helped keep SBU guessing who was going to get the ball. Being able to record 58 kills while your leading hitter is on the bench with an injury was a great lift for us.”

JBU is now 13-7 for the season and will be at home Tuesday, September 30, against College of the Ozarks for their match. Game time is 7 pm.
