(October 3, 2003) - (North Little Rock-AP) -- One state senator says legislators may want to ask the Arkansas Supreme Court to extend a January first deadline for developing a plan to improve public schools. Senator Steve Faris of Malvern says the governor's tentative date of December eighth for a special session doesn't give legislators enough time to pass serious reforms. Experts estimate the state must spend 847 (m) million dollars a year in new education funding to bring its school system up to adequate academic standards. The money does not include up to one (b) billion dollars that could be needed to repair crumbling school campuses.
