Some Springfield residents object

(October 14, 2003) - (Springfield-AP) -- Springfield has 360 places of worship, most of them Christian, and six Christian colleges in the area. In fact, the southwest Missouri city is so engulfed in religion, some residents complain they're drowning in missionary zeal. Physician Joel Waxman, a devout Jew, says Christian missionaries are like telemarketers -- and he wants to be on a "don't-call" list. Dr. Waxman says patients have handed him religious pamphlets. Colleagues have invited him to church. People on the street stop him to say they're praying for him. Naomi Hunt is a non-practicing Catholic raised in Springfield. She says residents of the state's third-largest city don't seem to understand that some people don't think the way they do. She considers religion personal.
