Veteran lawmakers hop to avoid another fiasco
(October 20, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Some veteran legislators are trying to take control of the education reform debate that has made little progress for months. They say they're determined not to let an expected December special session on education reform end in the same disarray as this year's regular session. The Legislature adjourned in April with the state's budget, education reforms and numerous other issues unresolved. Senator Dave Bisbee of Rogers has served in the Legislature since 1993. He says that, contrary to popular belief, some major work has been under way. Bisbee is working with officials from the state Education Department on a school-funding formula. The joint House and Senate Education Committees plan weekly meetings. They'll be going through various education plans, including a 79-page proposal offered by Governor Huckabee.
