Feds claim Wal-Mart knew about illegals
(October 24, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Federal law enforcement sources say Wal-Mart had direct knowledge of immigration violations involving its cleaning contractors at stores across the country. Federal agents yesterday raided Wal-Mart's headquarters and 60 of its stores across the nation. More than 300 alleged illegal workers were arrested in the immigration crackdown at the world's biggest retailer. The workers were members of cleaning crews hired by outside contractors, but federal law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity say Wal-Mart knew of the violations. They cited recordings of meetings and conversations among Wal-Mart executives, managers and contractors. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Mona Williams says the company has seen no evidence from investigators that Wal-Mart knew about illegal workers. The company has pledged its cooperation. Williams says that cooperation will continue even if the allegation is true that Wal-Mart knew about illegal workers.
