Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 22, 2003) - John Brown University overpowered Oklahoma City University on Wednesday afternoon 4-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Although only leading 1-0 at the half on a goal by sophomore Daniel Fleming after an assist by sophomore Kyle Carter, the Golden Eagles came back strong in the second half to score an additional 3 goals and take the victory. In the second half scoring, Carter booted in a goal following an assist by frosh Rodrigo Juliao with 27 minutes remaining in the game, then frosh Joe Hirleman kicked in the third goal after an assist by sophomore Jesse Bellington with 7:20 left in the game. The final score came with only 1:17 remaining when senior Paul Barker had an unassisted goal.
Junior goalkeeper Pablo Fernandez had another outstanding day in the goalkeeper position by shutting out the Stars of Oklahoma City University.
“This was a must win for us to stay near the top of the conference race,” said Coach Bob Gustavson after the victory. “With only one loss, we still are in good position to win the title. We play the league leading team from Oklahoma Christian next week and they have not lost in conference play.”
With today’s win, the Golden Eagles up their Sooner Athletic Conference record to 3-1 and jump to 10-3-1 for the season. JBU will travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas on Saturday for a non-conference game with Ouachita Baptist University at 2 pm.
