We're behind you, Gov...way behind you...

(November 14, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Rank-and-file Republican state legislators say they have not accepted any plan to implement court-ordered education reforms. But state House and Senate Republican leaders say they're solidly behind Governor Huckabee's education plan. Senator Ruth Whitaker of Cedarville says legislative members of the governor's party are still working on trying to reach a consensus. Legislative Republicans spoke following a news conference they held yesterday in support of a Senate G-O-P talkathon" highlighting efforts by Senate Democrats to block four of President Bush's judicial nominees. The state Supreme Court declared Arkansas' public school funding system unconstitutional a year ago and gave the state until next January First to develop remedies. Huckabee has set a December special session on education but faces strong opposition to his plan to consolidate small high schools to better afford costly education improvements.
