Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 18, 2003) - John Brown University women’s basketball team rode the 19 points by freshman Ashley Wettengel to a 76-29 win over Rhema Bible College on Tuesday night in Siloam Springs. After building a 31-13 halftime lead, the Golden Eagles poured in another 45 points in the second period on their way to the 5th victory of the year. Another outstanding part of the play by JBU was the defensive effort. Twice during the second half, the Golden Eagle defense held Rhema scoreless for periods of 7 and 6 minutes. Combined with an 8-0 run to open up the 2nd half, JBU was able to put the game out of reach.
Wettengel continued her strong play with 19 points in only 19 minutes of play. Freshmen Nancy Pierre gave the Golden Eagles a spark off the bench by contributing a double double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Lesli Fanning made up for an off night shooting by dishing out 6 assists and getting 3 steals.
“This was really a game of two halves; we were just too impatient during the first half. Then we were able to come out in the second half and run our offense and get the ball inside which is crucial for us to get off good shots,” stated Coach Jeff Soderquist after the game. “We played another solid game on the defensive side of the ball. I really think that will be a key throughout the season.”
With the victory the Golden Eagles move to 5-1 on the season and travel to Batesville, Arkansas on Saturday for a non-conference game against Lyon College at 2 pm.
