Legislature takes day off from gridlock

(January 19, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- The state's largest city will be missing some of its buzz today. The Legislature won't be in session. Lawmakers have been meeting since December Eighth in an effort to come up with measures to overhaul the state's public school system. That's what the state Supreme Court has ordered the state to do, after the court ruled in November 2002 that the state's schools were unconstitutionally unfair and inadequate. But legislators are taking today off because, by law, today is Martin Luther King Junior Day, a state holiday that commemorates the slain civil rights leader.
