Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 17, 2004) - NAIA No. 13 John Brown University defeated St. Gregory’s 67-61 on Saturday afternoon in Shawnee, Oklahoma to take its third straight Sooner Athletic Conference victory. After a slow start, JBU finally developed some momentum midway through the first half and took a 30-22 lead into the locker room. With a strong first five minutes of the second half, the Golden Eagles lengthened their lead to 17 points at 47-30, but then allowed the Cavaliers to close the gap to 4 points with 2:23 remaining in the game before taking the final 6 point margin of victory.
Sophomore Brandon Cole had 20 points in the winning effort and senior Abdiel Mendieta pumped in 19 as the Golden Eagles advance to 3-2 in SAC play and 12-3 overall.
“This was a must win for us to get back on track in the SAC,” said JBU Coach John Sheehy. “We have now regained some of the momentum we lost early in the conference race. We hope to continue on the winning path with two home games next week. Our team needs to develop more consistency in our play to stay on the winning track.”
The Golden Eagles return to the friendly confines of Murray Sells Athletic Center next Thursday to host USAO in an 8:00 pm SAC game. JBU stays at home for the Saturday game with Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3:00 pm.
