Gonzalez Scores Two Goals to Lead JBU over Bacone 5-1
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (August 23, 2012) — The men’s soccer program started off the 2012 campaign on the right foot this afternoon at Alumni Field as the Golden Eagles downed the Bacone (Okla.) Warriors 5-1 behind two goals from sophomore striker Martin Gonzalez.
John Brown opened the season quickly when Zari Prescod and Luke Theimer netted two goals within two minutes, building the Golden Eagle lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute.
As noted by head coach John Miglarese, JBU was suffering from jitters early on, but seemed to settle down after the quick two-goal lead.
In the 32nd minute, Gonzalez cemented the Golden Eagle win with his first of the game. Freshman Eli Simonsen earned his first point in Blue and Gold when the Faroe Island native set up the third score of the contest.
Despite the JBU defense only allowing one shot on goal, Bacone’s James Barker made it count when he broke Pablo Garcia’s shutout bid just before halftime.
"We should have scored more," said Miglarese. "We are going to be playing much tougher teams later on.
"We need to get over this win quickly as we have a quick turnaround before hosting Missouri Baptist on Saturday.”
JBU outshot the Warriors 15-1 in the first half. The Golden Eagles held the 2-0 corner kick advantage.
The John Brown offense didn’t let up in the second half. Gonzalez recorded his second goal of the game in the 64th minute. Ten minutes later, sophomore Ryan Duncan found the scoresheet, netting his first of the season.
JBU (1-0) will now face Missouri Baptist at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field on Saturday, Aug. 25. The Spartans open its season tomorrow evening at Sooner Athletic Conference foe Rogers State at 8:00 p.m.
