Men's Soccer Downs Missouri Baptist 3-1, Moves to 2-0
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (August 25, 2012) — Luke Theimer scored the game winning goal in the 58th minute as John Brown University dispatched of Missouri Baptist 3-1 at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles have now moved to 2-0 on the season, a complete turnaround from last season’s 0-5 start.
Despite a lower level of competition to begin the season, head coach John Miglarese is pleased to be undefeated.
“Performance was a definite improvement from the effort shown on Thursday. We could be doing better, but we’re also happy to be 2-0.”
Theimer opened up the scoring 10 minutes in as forward unleashed a shot from the right elbow of the six yard box to place JBU at an early 1-0 lead. Zari Prescod assisted on the goal.
The lead would not grow in the first half as MBU’s Ethan Brunk made 3 saves in the first half. The Golden Eagles peppered the Spartan defense with 12 shots toward the Missouri Baptist net.
Halftime proved valuable as a rested JBU squad scored in the first minute of the second half. Ryan Duncan scored his second goal in as many games, as Martin Gonzalez earned the helper.
Gonzalez continued his strong play up front, setting up Theimer’s goal with a wicked shot that Brunk was unable to handle. Theimer easily put in the rebound to give JBU the 3-0 lead.
Pablo Garcia’s shutout was again spoiled by a single goal against when MBU’s Daniel Traylor netted an unassisted goal in the 77th minute.
Theimer led all players with nine shots while Garcia posted three saves on four shots.
The Golden Eagles will return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 1 when JBU will travel to NCAA II Harding University to take on the Bison at 7:30 p.m.
