JBU Defensive Corps Continues Shutout Streak, Defeats Bacone 3-0
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (September 14, 2012) — Casey O'Brien scored a pair of goals and Cheyenne Padgett added another as JBU's defense continued its shutout streak to 378 minutes today in a 3-0 victory over Bacone (Okla.).
"It was great to see Kristen and the defense keep a clean sheet again today," head coach Scott Marksberry said. "We still have things we can work on in the back, but we are making good progress.
"I really thought that Cheyenne, Madi (Susmilch), Whitney (Brannan), and Nicole (Kosin) made the game easier for us with their play in the midfield. MNU will be a great test for us tomorrow."
Conditions were difficult as rain hit Siloam Springs for the majority of the day. John Brown grounds crew did an admirable job keeping the playing field as ideal as possible for the second game of the JBU Invitational.
The Golden Eagles controlled the ball for the vast majority of the first half, but were unable to send a shot past the Warrior goalkeeper.
Bacone's Tara Thompson made nine saves in the first half.
Finally, in the opening moments of the first half, O'Brien started the scoring for JBU on an unassisted goal in the 47th minute.
Fifteen minutes later, O'Brien netted her second of the evening, and fifth in two games, when Alex Fahr sent a beautiful pass to the streaking O'Brien who belted a rising shot past the outstretched Thompson to build the Blue and Gold lead to two.
The visitors would battle back, sending shots towards Morency, but most were easily corralled by the freshman netminder.
With less than two minutes remaining, Padgett finished the scoring for John Brown. Brannan earned the assist on the closing marker.
"I was pleased with the way we handled the wet conditions today," added Marksberry. "We played a great first half in terms of our possession, combinations, and movement in the attacking third, but we came away with no goals to show for it.
"That is typically frustrating for a team, but I thought our girls did a nice job keeping their heads up, staying positive, and putting the game away."
After two losses to open the 2012 season, the Golden Eagles (4-2-0) have rattled off four straight shutout victories.
JBU will now face MidAmerica Nazarene at 4:00 p.m. at Alumni Field on Saturday (Sept. 15). The Pioneers lost its first match today to Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma Baptist by a final of 4-0.
