John Brown Hosts Oklahoma Baptist For Tournament Championship
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (November 9, 2012) — The No. 5 Golden Eagles welcome No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist to Alumni Field this afternoon where the two squads will face off for the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament crown at 2:00 p.m.
"We are really excited to be hosting the final today," admitted John Brown head coach John Miglarese. "OBU is a very difficult opponent for our team and it will take a massive effort to beat them.
"However, I am confident that our squad will rise to the challenge and put together a good performance."
Oklahoma Baptist's run to the finals is highlighted by two road victories by the Bison, first knocking off No. 2 Rogers State in the first round in convincing fashion (4-0) before stealing a 2-1 overtime victory away from No. 3 Wayland Baptist in the semifinals.
John Brown began the tournament on the road in Oklahoma City against No. 4 Mid-America Christian. The Golden Eagles, behind a pair of goals from Martin Gonzalez, captured a 3-2 victory, advancing to the semifinal round.
At the friendly confines of Alumni Field, JBU was a recipient of two goals from Eli Simonsen and a shutout performance by Pablo Garcia, vaulting them into the title game on the heels of a 2-0 win.
OBU and John Brown have met once already this season in conference play on Sept. 29 as both squads were opening SAC action. The Bison won the game 1-0 on a Tito Silva goal in the 75th minute.
While Oklahoma Baptist outshot the Golden Eagles 18-11 on the match, both keeper were forced to make seven saves, despite Garcia's inability to knock away Tito's late game-winner.
Netminder Marcus Oliveira recorded the clean sheet while Pedro Pereira notched four shots, pacing the Bison offense.
John Brown carries a 9-6-2 record into the title tilt. OBU comes into the match 8-8-0 overall.
"Our athletic department is making a huge effort to make Friday a big event for the Sooner Athletic Conference, the JBU campus and the entire Siloam Springs community," Miglarese added. "We will do our best to honor their support with a good showing in the final."
The winner of this afternoon's match will received the SAC automatic bid to the 2012 NAIA men's soccer national tournament which, after the first round of games is to be played at host sites around the country, will be held at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex located in Montgomery, Ala. from Nov. 26 through Dec. 1.
