Voters will decide property tax increase

(February 16, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Arkansans have the say in at least one tax to fund education reforms. This fall voters will decide if property taxes will increase in most of the state's 308 school districts. A new state law, passed in the special session would increase the minimum millage for property taxes for maintenance and operations in each district from 25 to 28. But the increase is conditional upon voter approval statewide in the November second election. If approved, the earliest the increase could be collected is 2005 for taxes assessed this year.
