JBU Drops Two at SNU

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 22, 2002) — The John Brown University men’s and women’s basketball teams dropped a pair of SAC conferences at Southern Nazarene University Thursday night.

The men suffered another heartbreaking loss in the final seconds as a Skipper Rowland 3-pointer found the net with only 5 seconds remaining to cap a SNU come from behind victory over JBU 83-80. JBU led by 15 points early in the second half and looked to be in control when SNU dialed in from the outside with a barrage of three pointers. With 5:30 to play JBU pushed the lead back to 9, but in the next 30 seconds SNU used a 4-point play and a 3-pointer to close the game to only 3 points.

Senior Simeon Hinsey led the way for JBU with 16 points and 8 rebounds. It is the fourth consecutive game in which Hinsey has led the Golden Eagles. “Simeon has really played well of late. He has taken his game to another level. He is one guy who definitely doesn’t want his career to end. We will need that urgency to become contagious if we want to make a run at the SAC tourney next week,” said coach John Sheehy.

With the loss JBU drops to 17-12 and 7-9 in SAC play. JBU is now 3-7 in SAC games decided in the final 2 minutes of play. “That makes for a frustrating season. If we are 7-3 then we are nationally ranked. Most of it is our own fault with things such as missed free throws, but sometimes you need a little bit of luck. Hopefully our fortune will turn next week,” commented Sheehy about the season so far.
