Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 15, 2002) - The John Brown University men’s basketball team once again took a highly ranked SAC opponent to the wire before falling 83-81 to No. 3 ranked Oklahoma Baptist University on Monday night in Shawnee, Oklahoma. JBU was unable to hold on to a 1 point lead with only 30 seconds left to play as the Bison were able to rally and stay unbeaten at 17-0. JBU once again showed the ability to play toe to toe with anyone even on the road as the Golden Eagles overcame a 42 to 23 free throw attempt advantage for the Bison. JBU All-American Jahir Mejia fouled out in only 15 minutes of action, followed by fellow starter Aldo McKay and 6-8 freshman reserve Rejyavick De Gracia.
Once again the Golden Eagles bench stepped up big outscoring the Bison bench 30-7. Abdiel Mendietta lead the way with 13 points and 5 assists. Starters Aldo McKay and Simeon Hinseon also turned in nice performances with 16 and 15 points. OBU was lead by the NAIA’s leading scorer Dujuan Brown with 31 points, 12 of 19 coming from the free throw line. JBU record drops to 12-5, the last three to highly ranked opponents on the road by a total of 7 points.
The Golden Eagles women’s basketball team could not overcome a slow start. JBU climbed within 9 at the half, but couldn’t get the offense in gear the second half losing to the Lady Bison 50-86. JBU was lead by LaTosha Wilson with 17 points. OBU was lead by Jadrea Seeley with 23 points.
Come out and support the Golden Eagles as they return to the friendly confines of Siloam Springs this Thursday and Saturday. JBU takes on Southern Nazarene at 6 & 8 p.m. Thursday and St. Gregory’s University at 1 & 3 p.m. on Saturday. most every aspect of the game. As a team JBU shot 27-of-30 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles beat the Crimson Storm on the boards, in shooting percentage, steals and assists.
JBU once again got a huge production off of the bench from sophomore guard Abdiel Mendieta. Mendieta scored 18 points-nine from behind the arc and seven from the free-throw line-in a little over 22 minutes of playing time. Senior starters forward Aldo McKay and guard Nathan Law each contributed 15 points for JBU, and senior guard Simeon Hinsey dished out seven assists while scoring seven points.
The next game for JBU is Saturday at home at 1 & 3 p.m. against SAC opponent St. Gregory’s University.
