Texas Trip Looms Large for JBU Teams

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 23, 2004) — The JBU men and women's basketball teams will be leaving campus Wednesday morning for the annual trip to West Texas to play Sooner Athletic Conference foes Wayland Baptist University and Lubbock Christian University. This year's games may have more importance to the Golden Eagle teams than in past years. On the men's side, JBU is currently standing in sole possession of third place at 9-6, one game ahead of Thursday night's competition, Wayland Baptist (8-7). For the women, JBU is currently tied with Wayland Baptist in third place, both teams with 10-6 SAC records.

Victories this week would not only improve the Golden Eagles' records, but would also give them favorable positions in the conference and the NAIA national poll. With a victory over Wayland Baptist on Thursday, the men would be assured of at least a fourth place finish in the conference. A win for the Golden Eagle women on Thursday would give them sole possession of third place in the conference race.

This week's games will end the regular season conference games for the women while the men will return home on March 4 to face SAC leader, Oklahoma Baptist University.

The Golden Eagle women's team will begin the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament in Oklahoma City on March 4 and the pairings will be set after this week's play. The men's conference tournament will begin March 12 and will also be played at Oklahoma City University.

JBU's scoring duo of Abdiel Mendieta and Brandon Cole and continue to blister the nets. Mendieta has now moved into 9th on the all-time JBU career list for scoring with 1308 points and Cole has now scored 975 points in less than two years of play. With 975 points, Cole ranks 17th on the all-time list for JBU.
