JBU Gunned Down By Wayland Baptist

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 26, 2004) — Wayland Baptist University moved into a tie with John Brown University in Sooner Athletic Conference action with a win over the Golden Eagles 80-71. Wayland took over in the first half and established a 13 point lead at the intermission. Even though JBU fought back to a 5 point deficit the Golden Eagles could get no closer and in an attempt to get back in the game with under two minutes remaining had to foul allowing Wayland to extend the lead to the final 9 point margin.

Fifty-six personal fouls marred the game as JBU went to the charity stripe 25 times and Wayland Baptist lined up for free throws 44 times. Poor first half shooting by JBU proved to be a factor that the Golden Eagles could not overcome. In the first half, JBU shot 32% from the field and 20% from the 3 point range.

Abdiel Mendieta led the Golden Eagles with 22 points and Ryan Woodson topped the rebounding for JBU with 9 boards. Wayland Baptist had 3 players in double figures as Kendall Webb pumped in 20 points, Nate Bridges scored 19 and Mykolas Jasaitis had 14.

JBU now is 21-8 for the season and 9-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Golden Eagles will play Lubbock Christian University on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm
