John Brown University Loses in Quadruple Overtime

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 28, 2004) — Jared Fears of No. 10 Lubbock Christian hit a lay-up with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to put the game into the first of four overtime periods before the home team finally outlasted the Golden Eagles and took a thrilling 101-99 Sooner Athletic Conference win. Regulation ended knotted at 63 and in the first OT period JBU jumped out to a 5 point lead with 1:25 remaining before Lubbock came back to knot the score at 76 on two free throws by Fears with 4 seconds left in the first overtime. The second overtime saw the teams play evenly throughout with neither team gaining more than a 3 point advantage. In the third OT period, John Brown University’s Brandon Cole hit a three-pointer with 1 second left to bring the score to 99-99. JBU moved out to a 5 point advantage, 99-94, in the 4th overtime on a couple of threes by Cole, only to allow the Chaparrals 7 unanswered points to end the game.

John Brown University had fought back from a 14 point deficit with 13:00 left in the second half, spurred on by the 3 point shooting of Cole who finished the afternoon with 30 points. Cole’s 30 points pushes him over the 1000 point mark in career scoring while only a sophomore. In addition to Cole’s point production, Abdiel Mendieta, who fouled out with 1:08 left in the first overtime, scored 16 points, Reyjavick De Gracia had a double double with 15 points while bringing down 15 rebounds and Brandon Brown contributed 11 points in the heartbreaking loss.

JBU returns home to take on SAC leader, Oklahoma Baptist, next Thursday in a 7:30 pm contest. The Golden Eagles are now 21-9 for the year and 9-8 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
