(March 26, 2004) - (Little Rock-AP) -- The private, nonprofit foundation raising 81-thousand dollars to supplement the salary of the state's new education director is about three-fourths of the way to meeting its goal. So far, the biggest contributor to the fund is the Walton Family Foundation of Bentonville, which has donated 20-thousand, five hundred dollars. The state Board of Higher Education Foundation has raised more than 60-thousand dollars for former Little Rock superintendent Ken James, who will take over as Arkansas education director on May third. James' current base salary as superintendent of Lexington, Kentucky, schools is 195-thousand dollars a year. Arkansas has promised to pay him almost 120-thousand a year and allow the foundation to fill in the gap.
