Men’s Tennis Notches 2 Victories in 4 Matches

Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 6, 2004) — Playing 4 matches in 3 days agreed with the JBU men’s tennis team as they came out victorious in 2 of the matches and came close to another victory. The 4 matches began with a 3-6 loss to Oklahoma Baptist University on Thursday, April 1 in Siloam Springs. The team then traveled to Lindsborg, Kansas on Friday, April 2, for matches against Bethany College and Central Christian College. The Bethany match was close all the way with Bethany pulling out the victory 5-4. The Golden Eagles came back to post a 9-0 victory over Central Christian the same day. On Saturday, April 3, the team moved over to Hillsboro, Kansas to take on Tabor College and walked away with their 2nd victory in the three days of competition.

JBU victors against Oklahoma Baptist were Tim Miller over Kevin Angel 6-1 and 7-5, Bobby Rojas over Curtis Schube 7-6, 7-9, and 6-4 and the doubles team of Miller and Rojas defeating Allard and Angel 8-6.

Against Bethany, Kevin Coleman defeated Brian Harvey 7-6, 3-7 and 6-2, Rojas bested Ryan Biegent 6-3, 2-6 and 16-14 and the doubles teams of Miller and Rojas defeated Kellerman and Harvey 8-6 while Coleman and Sam van Aswegen defeated Riegent and Larson 8-5.

In the Central Christian match, JBU was victorious in all 9 games. Miller defeated Elliott 8-0, Coleman defeated, Behrens 8-0, Rojas took Ross 8-0, Chad Weaver bested Chaney 8-1, Mike Dill defeated McGirven 8-2 and Dan van Aswegen topped Gardner 8-0 in singles. In doubles action, Miller and Rojas were winners over Elliott and Behrens 8-1, Coleman and Sam van Aswegen topped Ross and Chaney 8-0 and Dan van Aswegen and Dill bested McGirven and Gardner 8-0.

Playing their last match in the 3-day marathon, JBU again had victories in all but two of the games against Tabor. Miller bested Adrian 6-3 and 6-2, Coleman topped Friesen 6-4 and 6-1, Sam van Aswegen defeated Braun 6-0 and 6-3, Rojas was a winner over Hein 6-3 and 6-0, and Weaver defeated Nelson 6-4 and 6-1 in singles play. The doubles teams of Miller and Rojas defeating Adrian and Friesen 8-2 while Coleman and Sam van Aswegen were taking apart Braun and Nelson 8-1 ended play.

JBU upped their season record to 5-9 with the two victories. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, April 14 when they travel to Winfield, Kansas to play two matches. Opponents will be Southwestern and Cowley County Community College.
