Group seeks continued fed oversight of LR schools
(April 16, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- A lawyer for a group of black students doesn't want a federal judge to let the Little Rock School District off the hook. John Walker is the lawyer representing a group called the Joshua intervenors, which argues on behalf of black students in the district. Walker argued yesterday in a federal court filing that the district should be supervised by a federal judge for another two years. Last month, the district asked for a complete release from court supervision. If granted, that would free the school system from almost 50 years of federal court involvement. The current case stems from a 21-year-old desegregation lawsuit. U-S District Judge Bill Wilson Junior has set a hearing April 26th and 27th on the district's request.
