Former UAPB chancellor passes

(June 7, 2004) — (Pine Bluff-AP) -- Lawrence A. Davis Senior, who was the first chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, has died. He was 89. Davis inspired generations of young black students in his time at UAP-B and as the longtime president of Arkansas AM and N College. Davis died Saturday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center after being taken to the hospital late Friday. When Davis assumed duties as president of A-M-and-N in 1943 he was the youngest college president in the country. Thirty years later, he oversaw the merger with the University of Arkansas system in which the campus he led became UAPB. His son, Lawrence A. Davis Junior, is currently the UAPB chancellor. The elder Davis was a 1937 magna cum laude graduate of AM and N, received a master's degree in English from the University of Kansas in 1947 and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.
