Fayetteville police warn of e-mail scam
(June 10, 2004) — (Fayetteville-AP) -- Fayetteville Police Chief Rick Hoyt is warning people about an e-mail scam that is soliciting personal bank account information from some area residents. Hoyt says recipients should disregard e-mails that purport to be from Citibank Credit. Victims receive a message from what looks to be a Citibank e-mail address. The message says the person's account will be inaccessible unless that person sends account information through a Web site. A link in the e-mail sends victims to a non-Citibank Web site, where they are asked for account numbers, PIN numbers and other information. Criminals use that information to spend money from the victims' accounts. The police chief advised people to check with a bank upon receiving such a message.
