Taxpayer fines reversed

(June 11, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Hundreds of taxpayers who were told they've have to pay penalties for filing late can rest easy: it's all a mix-up. The state Department of Finance and dministration says a mistake led to 11-hundred-75 individual tax filers being told their returns were late. The state says a vendor processing the returns used the wrong filing date, and the taxpayers were incorrectly assessed penalties and interest. The department says taxpayers started calling this week to question the tax bills. The people wrongly cited for being late have been identified and they will receive letters of explanation. They won't have to pay the extra fees. The state says its vendor is correcting its pocedure so the mistake isn't repeated.
