Marriage initiative signatures submitted
(July 2, 2004) - (Little Rock-AP) -- A general-election vote to ban gay marriages in Arkansas through a constitutional amendment is in the hands of the Secretary of State's Office. The Arkansas Marriage Amendment Committee submitted nine cardboard boxes containing 200-thousand-693 signatures in favor of the proposed amendment yesterday. The office must verify the signatures of 80-thousand-570 registered voters to place the item on the November ballot. The amendment would define marriage as between a man and a woman. It would also not recognize gay marriages or civil unions performed out of state. Arkansas already bans gay marriage.
