Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 26, 2004) - The 2004 Golden Eagles are looking forward to continuing with the success of their 2003 season where they finished at 13-5-2. . Last year the Golden Eagles were Sooner Athletic Conference Champions at 4-1, as well as Region VI Champions and received a berth to the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year.
“I am really looking forward to working with this team. We have experience, energy, and the ability to be very competitive,” states Coach Bob Gustavson, who is entering his 24th year at JBU. Gustavson’s squad returns 19 players off last year’s team as they look towards building on last year’s successful season. Despite losing key scorer Frederico Suarez, a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, to graduation, the Golden Eagles still have a great offensive attack. The Eagle’s will be looking to Kyle Carter, who led the team last season with 12 goals. Also, JBU will be looking for Seth Hildebrant, and Daniel Fleming to step up and provide some offensive punch as well.
With the return of two time NAIA Honorable Mention Pablo Fernandez at goalkeeper, the defense for the Golden Eagles is going to be a tough challenge for many opponents. Fernandez had 93 saves and only allowed an average of 1.35 goals per game last season should be a player to watch for JBU.
The Golden Eagles hope that a tough non-conference schedule will prepare them for the always difficult Sooner Athletic Conference. JBU will host two teams during their “Fall Classic,” University of Mobile and University of Illinois Springfield, both of which have earned National Championships in the past.
The Golden Eagles have added 11 freshman to the roster this season, including Oscar Amaya from San Salvador, El Savador, Terry Andrew from St. John’s Antigua, Andrew Bradford from Friendswood, Texas, Nick Cornett from Fayetteville, Arkansas, Glen Goodner from Littleton, Colorado, Jonathan Hagen from Temple, Texas, Chris Hansmann from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Blake Lewis from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mark Minnich from Overland Park, Kansas, Joel Storie from Gillette, Wyoming, and Scott Wharton from Friendswood, Texas.
The JBU Golden Eagles men’s soccer team will open their home season September 1, when they host Ouachita Baptist University at 3:00 pm at Alumni Field.
