JBU's SIFE to Hold Expedition for Middle-School Students

Siloam Springs, Ark (October 11, 2001) — Monday, October 15, 2001, John Brown University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team will hold a Business Development Expedition for Northwest Arkansas middle-school students. Approximately one hundred girls and boys are expected to participate in the day-long business event on the JBU campus. John Brown business professors Dr. Don Balla, Dr. Delia Haak and Mr. Gene King plus SIFE students Irene Tobias and Eric Henry will help young students learn about writing business plans, legal aspects involved in doing business, marketing products and business ethics.

Students representing middle schools in Siloam Springs, Gentry and Gravette as well as those from J.O. Kelly Middle School, Helen Tyson Middle School and Greenland Middle School will attend the October 15 event. Eric Henry, JBU SIFE president says, “Our goal is to provide the students with a learning experience that is fun, realistic and meaningful. Our entire team advocates the ideas that hard work pays, free markets work, democracy leads to prosperity and freedom brings social responsibility. This day provides kids a taste of what they can do with their dreams.”

The experience is in preparation for the World Trade Expo 2001, which will be held on November 27, 2001 at the Northwest Arkansas Mall. The World Trade Expo, an annual SIFE project, teaches students how to start and run their own businesses. Student participants develop a creative product that they will sell on the day of the expo. The JBU SIFE Team assists the students as they journey from idea to actual creation and sale of their goods.
