Women Win Close One Against Wayland
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 3, 2005) — The JBU women’s basketball team (12-9, 4-6 SAC) escaped with a one point win over the Wayland Baptist Queens Thursday night in Siloam Springs. Coming off a slow first half, the Golden Eagles were able to re-group and pull off the 50-49 victory.
The Queens got off to a quick start, scoring 13 points in the first ten minutes before JBU’s Kendra McCormick put in their first field goal of the game. The Queens got their largest lead of the game of 17 with four minutes left in the half. JBU went on a 9-1 run to end the half at 19-28. The Golden Eagles chipped away at the lead until finally taking over the lead at the 11:59 mark. The Queens kept it close and tied the game at 49-49 with :22 left in the game. A free throw by Senior Caitlin Chandler with :14 on the clock clenched the game for the Golden Eagles.
Sophomore Ashley Wettengel led the scoring for JBU with 11. Kendra McCormick and Nancy Pierre were close behind with 9. The Golden Eagles shot 42.6% from the field and held their opponent to 35%.
The women are back in action Saturday afternoon in Murray Sells facing Lubbock Christian. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
