JBU Upsets #7 Union in First Round Tournament Action
Siloam Springs, Ark. (March 18, 2005) — At large bid John Brown University upset the #7 ranked Union University (Tenn.) in the first round of the 2005 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship on Thursday in Kansas City.
This is the third straight first round win in the National Tournament for the Golden Eagles. JBU is now 20-11 for the season.
John Brown went on a 19-2 run in the last six minutes of the first half to take a 41-55 lead into halftime. JBU built the lead to as much as 23 in the second half, and went home with an 84-72 victory.
Junior Brandon Cole led all scoring with 27, making five treys in the game. Senior Reyjavick DeGracia added 13 points. Senior Pat Smits and sophomore Adam Workman each had 10 points. Senior Ryan Woodson led the team in rebounds with 10. The Golden Eagles held their opponent to 37.7 percent shooting from the field.
The Golden Eagles will face #10 Louisiana State-Shreveport (27-8) at 8:00 p.m. Friday night to try to advance to the Elite Eight.
