Golden Eagles Take 2-of-3 in JBU Classic

Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 27, 2005) — The John Brown University volleyball team defeated Lambuth (Tenn.) 3-1 Saturday afternoon to finish the season-opening JBU Classic with a 2-1 record. Tati Silva led the Golden Eagles with 18 kills, and Elisa Mendieta added 13 in the 30-26, 25-30, 30-19, 30-20 victory. Juliana Todescan tallied 48 assists, and Christine Wells produced 36 digs. Lambuth (2-2), also lost to Houston Baptist 3-0 on Saturday and defeated Southwest Baptist (Mo.) and Huston-Tillotson (Tex.) on Friday.

In Friday action, John Brown defeated Huston-Tillotson 3-0 in the tourney opener before losing 3-1 to Houston Baptist later that evening. Elisa Mendieta had 17 kills against Huston-Tillotson, and Juliana Todescan contributed 9 aces, 37 assists, and 12 digs. Tati Silva led against Houston Baptist with 21 kills, while Todescan had 51 assists, and Christine Wells 23 digs.

John Brown head coach Robyn Gordon was quite impressed by her team’s effort against Houston Baptist. “Tremendous match from both teams,” she said. “Explosive offense and great ball control on defense.” All four games in that match were decided by ten points or less.

Houston Baptist was the only team to escape Siloam Springs without a loss, finishing 4-0. Southwest Baptist finished alongside Lambuth with a 2-2 record. Missouri Valley College finished 1-2, and Huston-Tillotson was 0-4.

John Brown plays next at home Tuesday at 7:00 against Bacone (Okla.).
