JBU Wins 2-of-3 at Blue & Gold Invitational

Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 22, 2005) — The John Brown Golden Eagles won two of their three matches in the Blue & Gold Invitational this weekend in Siloam Springs. On Friday afternoon, John Brown defeated Sooner Athletic Conference foe Wayland Baptist (Texas) 3-0. Tati Silva scored 11 kills and added 15 digs in that match. Summer Cox contributed 10 kills, and Juliana Todescan made 36 assists, 16 digs, and 3 aces.

John Brown opened Saturday’s action with a 3-1 loss to conference opponent Lubbock Christian (Texas). Silva led the Golden Eagles with 22 kills, and Cox added 15. Todescan added 51 assists, 23 digs, and 4 blocks. Christine Wells and Silva each contributed 29 digs. The Golden Eagles lost senior middle hitter Elisa Mendieta to an ankle injury at the start of Game 4, and they dropped the final two games 29-31 and 28-30.

Still without Mendieta in the next match, John Brown swept Graceland (Iowa) 3-0. Freshman Laurae Marty stepped up to fill Mendieta’s shoes and contributed 6 blocks and 6 kills in the winning effort. Silva once again led the Golden Eagles with 14 kills, 10 digs, and 6 aces. Todescan provided 23 assists and 5 aces. Sophomore middle hitter Taylor Young suffered an ankle injury in Game 2 but was able to return in Game 3.

John Brown is now 24-6 overall and 4-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Golden Eagles will visit St. Gregory’s (Okla.) on Tuesday.
