JBU Advances in Regional; Ganter, Thoma Named MVP, Coach of the Year

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 8, 2005) — Abby Leonard broke a scoreless tie in the 89th minute to give the John Brown Golden Eagles a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma City in the NAIA Region VI semifinals Tuesday in Shawnee, Okla. Amber Aparicio collected the assist on a corner kick. Both the Golden Eagles and the Stars had been hampered the entire game by a brisk 10-20 mile-per-hour wind. With the wind at their backs in the first half, the Golden Eagles out-shot the Stars 8-1. With the situation reversed in the second half, the Stars out-shot the Golden Eagles 10-3. Natalie Wall made 5 saves for John Brown (12-5-1), which advances to Wednesday’s 2:00 regional final against Oklahoma Baptist. The winner will compete in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City.

In other news, the Sooner Athletic Conference announced today the selection of John Brown forward Nikki Ganter, a junior from Sachse, Texas, as the conference’s Most Valuable Player. John Brown head coach Joe Thoma was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. Thoma is in his fourth season as head coach at John Brown after starting the women’s soccer program in 2002.
