JBU Wins SAC Tournament; Collects Conference Awards

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 14, 2005) — The John Brown Golden Eagles are the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament champions after defeating Southern Nazarene (Okla.) 3-1 and Lubbock Christian (Texas) 3-2 Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. The Golden Eagles topped the Crimson Storm 30-26, 30-24, 22-30, 30-25 in the semifinals and then came back to beat the Lady Chaparrals 30-26, 16-30, 25-30, 30-28, 15-12 in the championship match.

Against Southern Nazarene, Tati Silva scored 19 kills and 4 aces while making 18 digs. Juliana Todescan provided 49 assists, 32 digs, 9 kills, and 5 blocks. Christine Wells contributed 23 digs. Samantha Rogoff scored 12 kills and made 5 blocks, and Taylor Young scored 11 kills.

In the championship victory over Lubbock Christian, Silva again led the way with 26 kills and 32 digs. Todescan contributed 53 assists, 28 digs, 7 kills, and 3 blocks, while Wells added 31 digs. Elisa Mendieta scored 13 kills and made 5 blocks, and Rogoff scored 11 kills while contributing 4 blocks.

Silva earned the tournament MVP award and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Wells. Todescan was named the Sooner Athletic Conference MVP, and she was joined by Wells and Silva on the All-SAC 1st Team. Mendieta, meanwhile, made it onto the All-SAC 2nd Team. The Golden Eagles continued to collect accolades as Todescan was also named the conference Setter of the Year, and Wells was named the Back Row Specialist of the Year in a tie with Lubbock Christian’s Hayley Whiteside.
