15th Annual World Trade Expo

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 11, 2005) — Once again middle school entrepreneurs from Northwest and Central Arkansas will be scurrying around the Northwest Arkansas Mall. John Brown University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will host the 15th annual World Trade Expo on Friday, Nov. 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Middle school students will set up booths, show off their business plans and sell their wares.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the student to learn how to start and run their own businesses all the way from the beginning of coming up with the idea, writing a business plan, to setting up a running businesses at the mall,” Tiffany Taylor, graduate assistant for the division of business and former JBU SIFE president said.

Over 175 students submitted business ideas and plans to the SIFE team. The team then narrowed it down to the top 25 teams to compete for cash prizes at the expo. The SIFE team, along with representatives from Wal-Mart and JBU’s Soderquist Center for Leadership and Ethic’s will help judge this year’s winners.

On Oct. 21, JBU’s SIFE team held a seminar at the university to teach over 100 aspiring business entrepreneurs about basic business and marketing principles. The students learned how to manage their money, and how to run a successful business while also practicing ethical business standards. They also had the opportunity to hear from Don Blakeman of Blakeman’s Fine Jewelry, and Holly Harris, manager of Warren Shoes, speak on conducting business in the mall.

JBU’s SIFE team works closely with local and regional schools by distributing curriculum for teachers on basic business and marketing principles to use in their classrooms. SIFE then supports the curriculum by holding seminars and short lectures for students during the academic year.
