Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 2, 2006) - Brandon Cole scored 31 points and hit 6 three-pointers, but the John Brown Golden Eagles could not hold onto a 40-36 halftime lead Monday night, eventually losing their Sooner Athletic Conference opener 79-76. Oklahoma Baptist’s Frank Benson scored 26 points and hauled in 9 rebounds, and Julius Hurd also came close to a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
A Cole 3-pointer tied the game at 11-11 with 13:36 left in the first half, and a free throw and a field goal by John Williams gave John Brown its first lead soon after. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 9 before halftime, but surrendered the lead four minutes into the second half. The lead changed hands three more times before the Oklahoma Baptist’s Nick Pope hit a free throw with 11:13 left to make the score 52-51. The Bison led 68-57 with just 3:40 remaining, but the Golden Eagles staged a comeback of their own, capped by another Cole trey with 0:02 left on the clock to pull John Brown within 78-76. John Brown was forced to foul, and Trey Griffin hit one free throw to set the final score.
Senior point guard Alex Terry nearly earned a triple-double as he scored 11 points, dished out a season-high 10 assists, and collected 8 rebounds for John Brown. Cody Page added 13 points. Kortney Brown scored 10 for Oklahoma Baptist.
