Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 5, 2006) - The 21st-ranked John Brown Golden Eagles earned their first conference victory of the season Thursday night, defeating Science & Arts (Okla.) 73-63 in Siloam Springs. Kendra McCormick had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds for John Brown. Nancy Pierre scored 13, Lesli Fanning contributed 12, and Ashley Wettengel added 10. Point guard Alicia Baer dished off 7 assists to go along with 7 points.
The Golden Eagles (9-4) dominated the Drovers in the first half but were unable to build a lead larger than 12 points, eventually leading 34-24 at halftime. John Brown exploded in the second half, however, going on a 23-11 run through the first seven-and-a-half minutes. Fanning hit three treys during that stretch and finished the game 4-of-6 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles made 45% of their three-point attempts and ended the game shooting nearly 46% from the field. Their defense held the Drovers to just 34.4% field goal shooting, despite a late 9-0 Science & Arts run to finish the game.
Stephanie Russell led the Drovers with 20 points. Three of her teammates also scored in double figures. Katie Sterling scored 14, Lindsey Monroe scored 13, and Nikki Yager added 10.
John Brown travels to Alva, Okla., Saturday to face SAC opponent Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1:00.
