JBU Women Get Back on Track

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 21, 2006) — The John Brown Golden Eagles moved back above .500 in Sooner Athletic Conference play with a 61-47 victory in Siloam Springs Saturday over St. Gregory’s (Okla.). Kendra McCormick scored 16 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, and Lesli Fanning scored 12 points for John Brown (12-7, 4-3). Magali Freitas and Almeli da Silva led St. Gregory’s (8-11, 2-5) with 9 points each. Da Silva also had 7 rebounds.

The lead changed just once in the game, at the 17:15 mark in the first half when McCormick scored on an assist from Nancy Pierre to put the Golden Eagles ahead 5-4. After leading 32-22 at halftime, John Brown built its lead up to 20 when Fanning’s fourth three-pointer on another Pierre assist made the score 57-37 with 3:27 left in the game. Pierre finished the game with 4 assists, 5 points, and 5 rebounds. Ashley Wettengel had 4 assists and 5 points as well but also pulled down a team-leading 9 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles scored 27 points off 22 Lady Cavalier turnovers, 20 of which were steals. John Brown only committed 10 turnovers. The Golden Eagles made 9-of-10 free-throw attempts, though they shot just 39.3% overall.

John Brown travels to Chickasha, Okla., on Thursday to play Science & Arts at 6:00.
