Golden Eagles Finish Strong against Pioneers
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 18, 2006) — The John Brown Golden Eagles won the battle between the third- and fourth-place teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference Saturday as they defeated 18th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 69-58 before a packed house in Siloam Springs. Alex Terry and Brandon Cole led John Brown (14-12, 9-6) with 19 points each, and Terry added 6 assists. Joel Tesis also scored 14 points for the Golden Eagles. Kendall Webb and Clifton Clarida scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Pioneers.
The Golden Eagles started the game with a blistering 16-2 run in the first five minutes that included eight points by Cole and six points by Tesis. A 3-pointer by Cody Page maintained the John Brown lead at 14, 27-13, with 8:00 left until halftime, and the Golden Eagles still led 35-22 with 4:19 remaining. By halftime, however, the Pioneers had cut their deficit down to 37-30.
Nate Bridges scored a bucket for Wayland Baptist with 12:54 left in the game to make the score 42-41, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get. Cole’s third trey put John Brown up 53-43 with 8:56 remaining, and the Golden Eagles led by as many as 13 in the final minute thanks to key free throws by Cole, Terry, and John Williams.
John Brown remains in fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference, but now sits just a half-game behind Wayland Baptist (16-9, 10-6).
