JBU Men’s Tennis Wins Two of Three

Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 13, 2006) — The John Brown Golden Eagles won two out of three matches this week in Siloam Springs. The Golden Eagles lost 7-2 to Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday, but defeated Hendrix College (Ark.) 6-3 on Wednesday and Oklahoma Wesleyan 6-3 on Thursday. Against Oklahoma Baptist, Kevin Coleman and Sam Van Aswegen picked up a doubles win over Jared Haley and Eric Scroggins 9-7. Coleman beat Haley 6-4, 6-1 in singles. Against Hendrix, Austin Phillips and Bobby Rojas defeated Ryan Strickland and Sam Jackson 8-2; and Kyle Carter and Peter Thulson beat Garrett Sprowls and Craig Thomas 8-6. Van Aswegen topped Will Matthews 6-2, 6-3 in singles action, and Rojas defeated Ryan Bean 6-4, 6-0. Phillips beat Strickland 7-5, 6-2, and Thulson defeated Jackson 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. It was John Brown’s first victory over Hendrix during Golden Eagles coach Robert Walker’s tenure. Finally against Oklahoma Wesleyan, Coleman and Van Aswegen defeated Bruno Seves and Ryan Kosmicki 8-5; and Phillips and Rojas beat Jim Rabuck and Ben Schmitt 8-4. Van Aswegen defeated Schmitt 6-3, 6-1 in singles, and Rojas handled Kosmicki 6-0, 6-1. Phillips beat Rabuck 6-4, 6-1, and Thulson defeated Dan Sitton 6-2, 7-5.

The Golden Eagles improved their season record to 8-8. They will travel to Oklahoma City April 21 and 22 for the regional tournament.
