Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 5, 2006) - The John Brown Golden Eagles gave up a 3-0 sweep at home Tuesday against Ouachita Baptist (Ark.). The Tigers defeated the Golden Eagles 30-19, 30-21, 30-26.
Ouachita Baptist took an early lead in the first game and never looked back. In the second game, the Tigers were even more dominant, leading 22-8 before a Golden Eagle run cut the score to 26-18. John Brown (0-6) found some consistency in the third game, leading early before giving up the advantage midway through. The Golden Eagles stayed close, however, and were within 28-26 after several spirited volleys. But the Tigers kept their composure to close out the victory.
According to John Brown head coach Robyn Gordon, lack of passing was the Golden Eagles’ critical flaw in the match. “If we can’t pass, we can’t run our offense, and that’s what happened,” she said. “We struggled with the pass, and we can’t expect to win when that happens.”
Breanne Garrett led Ouachita Baptist (3-4) with 11 kills and 4.5 blocks. Britney Davis scored 10 kills and 3 aces, while Raichel Settle had 20 digs and 9 kills. Brettney Cheatham contributed 36 assists, 17 digs, and 4 aces; and Becky Cunningham made 19 digs.
For John Brown, senior Sam Rogoff scored 9 kills, and senior Juliana Todescan had 33 assists. Sophomore Aubrey Junker made 18 digs; and freshman Suzie Schult scored 2 aces. Senior Summer Cox and sophomore Laurae Marty contributed 8 kills apiece.
John Brown plays next this weekend at the Baker University Tournament in Baldwin City, Kan.
