Golden Goal Lifts Golden Eagles
Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 8, 2006) — The first goal Mikey Roberts scored as a John Brown Golden Eagle was golden indeed. Roberts rolled a shot past Erik Lefebvre in the 94th minute to give John Brown a 1-0 sudden-death overtime win over Houghton (N.Y.) Friday in the JBU Fall Classic.
The game-ending goal by the sophomore-transfer forward from St. John’s, Antigua, came suddenly in a game controlled by Houghton’s defense. John Brown head coach Bob Gustavson remarked, “I didn’t think it would come. They were just sitting back and playing real solid defense. I didn’t think we could crack the nut, so to speak.”
The Golden Eagles had already attempted 10 shots on goal, and goalkeeper Lefebvre had accumulated 10 saves. John Brown junior Andrew Bradford and freshman Nick Robbins combined for three shots on goal late in the second half, with another near-attempt in the box by Bradford being deflected by a defender in the 80th minute.
Roberts was able to overcome Lefebvre by taking a pass from Garrett Horton and shooting across the goalmouth from the left side of the 6-yard box. Once the ball passed Lefebvre, it rolled unmolested into the net as the crowd erupted and the Golden Eagles mobbed Roberts.
Not to be overlooked was John Brown’s own defense. The Golden Eagles limited the Highlanders to just two shots on goal, both in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Watson saved those attempts, including one chest-high strike from 20 yards out.
John Brown (2-1-0) plays on Saturday in the final game of the JBU Fall Classic, facing Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at 3:00. Houghton (0-4-0) will face Oklahoma City in Game 3 at 12:30.
In Game 1 Friday, Oklahoma City defeated Calumet 8-0. Ryan Trudgian accounted for 5 goals.
