Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 30, 2006) - The John Brown Golden Eagles built upon recent positive performances to finally claim their first road victory of the season, a 2-1 decision Saturday over St. Gregory’s in Shawnee, Okla. Goals by senior forward Nikki Ganter and sophomore midfielder Rachel Gerdin gave John Brown the win, as a late rally by St. Gregory’s fell short.
The Golden Eagle defense turned in another dominating performance, allowing just 4 shots-on-goal and no corner kicks, but it was the Golden Eagle offense that finally hit its stride. Ganter scored past goalkeeper Christina Carden in the 48th minute on an assist from Gerdin, and then Gerdin scored unassisted in the 75th minute. It was the first time this season that John Brown scored more than one goal in a match.
St. Gregory’s did manage to put a tally on the board, but Kimberly Hawkins’ goal in the 86th minute from an assist by Jana Sexton came too late to make a difference. That goal did break John Brown’s 196-minute shutout streak, however. Junior goalkeeper Natalie Wall made 3 saves Saturday, and has allowed only two goals in the last 306 minutes of play. Carden made 6 saves for St. Gregory’s (1-9-0, 0-6-0 SAC).
John Brown (2-7-1, 2-3-1 SAC) gets a full week off until next Saturday’s 2:00 homecoming match against Southern Nazarene.
