Men and Women Soccer Fall to OBU at Home
Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 21, 2006) — Another cold day in the Ozarks saw both John Brown teams lose hard fought matches to conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist. The women fell in overtime 2-1, and the men lost in regulation 2-1.
In the women’s match, Oklahoma Baptist attacked early striking first in the 8th minute of the match. Defender Lauren Aldred crossed the ball to Menjung Zang who was able to dribble through several defenders before placing the ball out of the reach of goalkeeper Megan Rouse for the goal. Less than ten seconds later forward Nikki Ganter scored the equalizer as she ran pass several defenders on an assist from senior midfielder Amber Aparicio.
The defense stepped up for the remainder of the match as both teams forced each other into overtime. However, in the 95th minute midfielder Lin Yan was able to cross the ball to forward Aline Santos on a corner kick who scored with the header. Megan Rouse had 15 saves in the losing effort.
The men’s game was a physical match that saw each team receive five yellow cards a piece before it was over. Oklahoma Baptist struck first in the 31st minute when Manuel Ojalvo scored off the rebound, and remained ahead at the half after several near misses by John Brown.
John Brown came to life in the 2nd half and tied the game in the 54th minute when senior midfielder Phillip Davis found sophomore forward Mikey Roberts cutting across the box for the header. However, in the 79th minute freshman forward Sullivan Silva was able to get past several defenders and score unassisted in the box and John Brown was unable to recover.
This losses put the women’s team at 4-10-1, 4-6-1 SAC, and the men fall to 3-10-2, 0-8-1 SAC. Both teams travel to Okla. Christian this Tuesday. The women will play at 5:00 and the men at 7:00.
