Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 3, 2006) - The John Brown Golden Eagles men’s basketball team closed out day one of the Southwestern Assemblies of God Classic in Waxahachie, Tex. with an 87-78 overtime win against Evangel (Mo.). Adam Workman led John Brown (2-0) with 33 points on 8-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc. Junior point guard, Tyler Dees added 13 points after hitting a 3-pointer, and shooting a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line, and junior post man, Joel Tesis pitched in with nine points and 11 rebounds.
John Brown led by nine points with two minutes remaining in the game before Evangel (0-1) began to press and eventually force the game into overtime after nailing a 3-pointer with .4 seconds remaining.
In overtime, it came down to who could hit free throws, and John Brown did just that outscoring Evangel 19-10. John Brown shot 86.2% from the free-throw line for the game.
John Brown committed 27 turnovers, but out-rebounded Evangel 41-38, and shot 44% from the field, including 35.7% from long distance.
Head coach John Sheehy was glad to get the win, but knows his team must take better care of the ball in tough situations. “We had the game won in regulation, but they forced us into some turnovers,” said Sheehy. “The game was rough and physical, and maybe we can learn from it.”
On Saturday, day two of the classic, John Brown plays Central Bible (Mo.) at 4:00 p.m.
