Haak Receives Dissertation of the Year Award from U of A
Siloam Springs, Ark (May 16, 2000) — On Friday evening, May 12, 2000, Dr. Delia Haak received the prestigious Dissertation of the Year Award from the University of Arkansas’ College of Education. In December 1999, Dr. Haak successfully defended her dissertation entitled, "Using an Educational Development Model to Design a Masters Degree in Leadership," earning her the Doctor of Education degree with a concentration in higher education.
Three judges, each from a separate college at the University of Arkansas, chose Dr. Haak’s dissertation from a pool of nominations with the highest overall ranking. One judge wrote, "This dissertation is not an empirical product. Rather it is a conceptual modeling effort. The effort to originate a design of a masters degree program in leadership is exceptional in its form. The conclusions and recommendations offered are thorough and defensible. Moreover, the presentation is such high quality that readers of this document would be highly encouraged to pursue such a program."
Dr. Haak’s dissertation served as the basis for John Brown University’s new Master of Science in Leadership and Ethics (MSLE) degree program that began August, 1999 with a cohort of twenty-two students. The MSLE program integrates a body of knowledge infused with the core values of the Christian faith and character, which are applicable within organizations and communities in diverse contexts.
A combination of highly qualified JBU faculty in partnership with visiting world class adjunct faculty and practitioners provide the instruction for this unique program. Dr. Haak has also helped develop a Master of Business Administration degree that will begin in August 2000, with a core of classes in ethical leadership.
Currently Dr. Haak serves as both an Assistant Professor in the Division of Business at JBU and Director of Academic Programs at the Soderquist Center for Business Leadership and Ethics. She has taught at JBU since 1992, after graduating with a B.S. in Business Administration from John Brown University and a M.B.A. from the University of Arkansas.
Dr. Joe Walenciak, Chairman of the Division of Business at JBU voiced his congratulations on behalf of JBU. "We are very proud of Delia, and we believe that this award is a reflection of both her personal character and professional quality. Delia gives a 150% effort in everything she does, and we are thankful to have her as a part of our faculty."
