Men Impressive in Season Opener
Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 24, 2007) — In a game that ended prematurely due to thunderstorms, the John Brown Golden Eagles recorded their first victory of the season Friday with a 3-1 victory over Northwood (Texas) in Siloam Springs. Freshman Gabriel Duarte scored two goals and junior Spencer Watson had three saves in the win.
Sophomore midfielder Nick Robbins tallied John Brown’s first goal in the third minute of the game on a breakaway. Less then two minutes later, Northwood’s Ernest Villareal would score the equalizer during a scramble in the box. It would stand tied 1-1 at halftime.
John Brown would strike early in the second half after freshman forward Juan Iraola would find Duarte streaking across the box for his first goal which came in the 53rd minute. Seven minutes later, freshman Jamal Bandeh would once again find Duarte in the box for his second goal.
“Gabriel had two really nice goals,” said head coach Bob Gustavson. “His first got us rolling in the second half and that gave us some momentum.”
During the 73rd minute the referees would call the game due to lightning and awarded John Brown the victory.
Gustavson said, “The rules state that after the 70th minute of a game the game becomes official, and the referees thought it was necessary to stop for the safety of the players.”
John Brown will travel to Batesville, Ark. to face Lyon on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. They return home on Sept. 7-8 to host the JBU Fall Classic.
