Golden Goals Lift Golden Eagles
Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 23, 2007) — With the end of the regular season at hand, JBU men’s and women’s soccer squads closed out conference play both defeating Oklahoma Baptist Shawnee with a pair of overtime goals. The women continued their hot streak moving to 9-0 in the SAC and 13-3 overall. Meanwhile, the men improved to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. OBU’s women fell to 10-6, 5-4. Their men dropped to 6-9-1, 2-5. After going scoreless in the first overtime period, JBU’s Jodi Knack put on the finishing touches when she booted in the golden goal to end the match in the 107th minute. Camille Malkiewicz picked up the assist. Earlier in the match, Rachel Gerdin got things rolling when she headed in a long Malkiewicz cross at the 20:57 mark. OBU evened things up in the 73rd minute when Marinne Burnham juked several defenders before blasting a shot pass JBU’s keeper. With the win, the women look forward to the first round of SAC Tournament play which begins Saturday at 2 p.m. As the No. 1 seed, JBU plays host to the No. 8 seed, Science and Arts of Okla. (5-8-1, 2-6). Head coach Joe Thoma is proud of the way his team has played throughout the season and is looking forward to the post season. “It’s been wonderful all season,” said Thoma. “But now we have to gear up and get ready for USAO.” And although his team ran through conference undefeated, Thoma knows his team will have to remain focused in order to play well this upcoming weekend. “We’ve got a deep bench,” said Thoma. “So the girls know that there are other girls that can go out there and play if they don’t do their job. In the men’s match, freshman Caleb Theimer picked up the golden goal at the 91:45 mark after blasting a follow-up shot pass OBU’s keeper for the win. “I thought the keeper had it,” said Theimer. “Juan [Iraola] made a great run at it to get that first shot on goal and I just hustled to get it.” JBU’s first goal came at the 48:20 mark when Akeem Grant found Adrian Jasso in the box for the score. OBU tied things up in the 61st minute when Taizo Kasuya scored unassisted. Less than six minutes later, Iraola tapped in a shot after Jasso found him off the corner kick. A JBU own goal in the 84th minute forced the action into overtime. JBU’s men also head in the post season and look to head to the No. 3 seed Oklahoma Christian on Friday at 3 p.m.
